John Douglas Lewthwaite of Fitzroy, City of Yarra County, VIC Australia was born on April 8, 1894 in Paddington, NSW to John Case Lewthwaite and Ellen Maria (Mcloughlin) Lewthwaite. He had siblings Mary Maud Lewthwaite, Annie Helena (Lewthwaite) Kelso, Florence Elizabeth Lewthwaite, Grace Margaret Helen Lewthwaite, Nellie Blanche Lewthwaite, and Mona Lewthwaite. He married Jane Esther (Walters) Lewthwaite, and had a child Grace Dorothy Lewthwaite. John Lewthwaite died at age 54 years old on April 3, 1949 in Fitzroy, VIC.

The Panic of 1893, and the resulting depression, hit coal miners hard and the miners only struck for 8 weeks - they couldn't afford to live without their wages any longer.
