1857 - In the year that John Dwyer was born, on October 13th, New York banks closed due to the Panic of 1857. The banks didn't reopen until December 12th.

1862 - By the time he was merely 5 years old, on July 1st, the Bureau of Internal Revenue was created. Established to raise funds for the Civil War, income tax was supposed to be temporary and was allowed to expire 10 years later. The Internal Revenue Service was created in the early 20th century.

1871 - By the time he was just 14 years old, on July 20th, British Columbia became the 6th province of Canada. While Vancouver is the largest city in British Columbia, Victoria was chosen as the capital..

1941 - John was 84 years old when on December 7th, the Japanese attacked the military base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The surprise aerial attack damaged 8 U.S. battleships (6 later returned to service), including the USS Arizona, and destroyed 188 aircraft. 2,402 American citizens died and 1,178 wounded were wounded. On December 8th, the U.S. declared war on Japan and on December 11th, Germany and Italy (allies of Japan) declared war on the United States. World War II was in full swing.

1946 - In the year of John Dwyer's passing, on July 4th, the Philippines gained independence from the United States. In 1964, Independence Day in the Philippines was moved from July 4th to June 12th at the insistence of nationalists and historians.
