In 1801, when he was 62 years old, on January 1st, after a brief period of independence, Ireland was merged with Great Britain, creating The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.

In 1802, at the age of 63 years old, John was alive when on March 16, Congress established the United States Military Academy at West Point - the oldest of the five service academies in the United States and one of the oldest service academies in the world.

In 1803, he was 64 years old when on March 1st, Ohio became the 17th state of the United States. Because Congress never passed a resolution declaring Ohio a state, however, it wasn't until 1953 that Ohio retroactively became an official state.

In 1804, he was 65 years old when on July 11th, Alexander Hamilton, former Secretary of the Treasury, and Aaron Burr, Vice President of the United States, fought a duel. Alexander Hamilton was shot and died the next day. Burr was indicted for murder and was acquitted but his political career was ruined.

In 1806, in the year of John Garrett's passing, Noah Webster published his first dictionary, A Compendious Dictionary of the English Language. It was the first truly American dictionary, incorporating the idioms and language of the day. Thus began his effort to standardize the American language, which was regionally different. It took him 26 years to complete the entire project.
