In 1804, on May 14th, Lewis and Clark started out from St. Louis, Missouri on an expedition to explore the West and to find a route to the Pacific Ocean. President Thomas Jefferson commissioned the trip shortly after the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. He wanted the new territory mapped and wanted to establish an American presence in the West before Great Britain or other European powers could claim it.

In 1820, on January 29th, George IV ascended the British throne when his father, George III (after 59 years on the throne), died. George III - King of England during the Revolutionary War - had been mentally ill and George IV had been Prince Regent since 1811, ruling in his father's stead.

In 1846, on April 25th, conflict widened in Texas' border disputes with Mexico, following the US annexation of Texas. On May 13th, the United States declared war on Mexico and the Mexican-American War officially began.

In 1903, the first World Series of American baseball was played between October 1st and 13th. The Boston Americans of the American League played the Pittsburgh Pirates of the National League. Boston came back from a three game to one deficit, winning the final four games to capture the title - such a large comeback wouldn't be repeated by a team until 1925. (A total of eight games were played.)

In 1943, in the year of John Henry William Harrison-Broadley's passing, on March 31st, the Broadway musical Oklahoma! opened. Written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II (the first of their string of successful collaborations), audiences loved it. The musical ran for 2,212 performances originally and was made into a movie in 1954.
