  • Personal Life & Family

John Joseph Kleaver was one of five children of Louis and Catherine (nee Leonard) Kleaver. He lived with his wife Mary on the second floor of a two-story house they owned in Old North St. Louis. Commonly known as John J. Kleaver, Sr. (although he wasn't really a "Senior" since his son John's middle name was "Joyce," not Joseph), that son, his son's wife Frances and their only child Patrick lived on the first floor. He was known for making and eating a hearty breakfast each morning with a full pot of coffee. He would finish it off with the first of many hand-rolled cigarettes he would smoke in the course of the day. Later in the day, he could be found sitting on the bench immediately behind the first floor kitchen in the backyard, reading the daily St. Louis Post-Dispatch, to which he would often write "letters to the editor." (Back then, the Post didn't verify the identity of the letter writer and he used pseudonyms.) Always to the point, some of his letters were hilarious, although they would now probably not be published as they were certainly not "politically correct."
