Timeline

1802 - In the year that John Nelson was born, on May 22, 1802, the first First Lady of the United States, Martha (Dandridge) Custis Washington died of a severe fever at age 70. Martha was buried next to her husband George Washington, at Mt. Vernon.

1815 - He was just 13 years old when on February 3rd, the first commercial cheese factory was founded in Switzerland. The first employee of the factory was a man named Loris Federspiel and his title was “Käse Schneidemaschine” - "Cheese Cutting Machine". His job was to taste the cheese to see if it was aged enough to sell.

1822 - He was 20 years old when on May 26th, 116 people died in the Grue Church fire - the biggest fire disaster in Norway's history. On Pentecost, the church was packed and a fire broke out on the outer wall of the southern transept. Within 15 minutes, the whole church was on fire and it burned to the ground. Almost half of the dead were under 16 and the cause of the fire is still unknown.

1848 - John was 46 years old when on February 2nd, the Mexican–American War ended with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The Rio Grande River became the border for Texas and California and parts of Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming became US territory. Ninety percent of the population in those areas chose to become US citizens.

1882 - In the year of John Nelson's passing, on September 4th, the switch to the first commercial electrical power plant in the U.S. - at 255-257 Pearl Street - was flipped by Thomas Edison. It lit one square mile of lower Manhattan and was powered by coal. The "electrical age" had begun.
