1832 - In the year that John Nesbitt was born, on November 14th, Charles Carroll - the last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence - died at his home in Maryland. He was 95 years old. He signed the Declaration as "Charles Carroll of Carrollton", distinguishing him from several other Charles Carroll's who were living in the area at the time.

1837 - At the age of only 5 years old, John was alive when on June 20th, 18-year-old Queen Victoria became the Queen of the United Kingdom upon the death of her uncle William IV - who had died without legitimate heirs. She would reign for more than 63 years, the longest reign of an English monarch until Queen Elizabeth II. Thus began what would be called the "Victorian Era."

1842 - John was just 10 years old when in January, William E. Clarke - a medical student at Berkshire Medical College - became the first person to use an inhaled anesthetic. He administered the anesthetic to pull a tooth.

1854 - When he was 22 years old, on January 6th, Sherlock Holmes was born. Author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created the character who has endured in popularity for over 160 years. The first Holmes book was published in 1887.

1860 - In the year of John Nesbitt's passing, on April 3rd, the Pony Express began its first delivery from St. Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento, California. The trip took 10 days and the riders carried 49 letters, five telegrams, and newspapers for San Francisco and other cities along the way.
