In 1816, in July, Lord Byron, Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin, Percy Bysshe Shelley and John Polidori were vacationing in Switzerland, talking about the occult. They challenged each other to write the best horror story they could. Mary (Godwin) Shelley wrote "Frankenstein" - which came to her in a dream. Polidori wrote the short story The Vampyre.

In 1867, on August 7th through September 20th, the new nation of Canada held its first Federal election. John A. Macdonald's Conservatives won the election.

In 1878, in Africa, the death of the last confirmed Cape lion occurred. The Cape lion was slightly larger than other lions and had black ears, a black mane, and black hair on its belly.

In 1889, on January 15th, the Coca-Cola Company was incorporated - originally as the "Pemberton Medicine Company". The Coca-Cola drink was originally created by John Stith Pemberton, first as a patent medicine and then as a soda fountain drink. Pemberton had sold the company in 1888, shortly before he died.

In 1918, in the year of John Stanton's passing, on November 1, an elevated train on the Brooklyn line of the subway - driven by an inexperienced operator because of a strike - tried to navigate a turn at 30mph. The limit on the curve was 6 mph. The 2nd and 3rd cars of the 5 car wooden train were badly damaged and at least 93 people were killed, making it the deadliest crash in New York subway history.
