John Thomas Bercher is the son of William H. Bercher (1876-1961) and Mary Cecilia Herlihy (1875-1961). His mother Mary was born on March 7, 1875 in Hoboken, Hudson, New Jersey, USA. She grew up in Mansfield, Richland, Ohio, United States and later moved to Manhattan, New York, New York and then on to Hoboken, Hudson, New Jersey. She passed away on May 1, 1961 in Hinsdale, Cook, Illinois. His father William was born on September 24, 1876 in Fort Smith, Arkansas, USA and grew up there. In the early 1890's he was employed by the Mission of the Immaculate Virgin and later moved to Manhattan, New York, New York where he worked for Western Electric from 1900-1934. He passed away on October 4, 1961 in Naperville, Illinois, USA.

John Bercher was born in New Jersey and grew up in Hoboken, Hudson, New Jersey. He and his family moved to Illinois in the 1920's and resided in Cicero, Cook, Illinois and Downers Grove, Dupage, Illinois. As an adult, John moved to California and settled in San Diego.

John had siblings including William Francis Bercher (1898-1994), James Joseph Bercher (1900-1993), Ellen Mary Bercher (1903-1993), Mary Rose Bercher (1905-1966), Frank Herman Bercher (1909-1983), and Joseph Patrick Bercher (1914-2004). At the time of his enlistment, he had completed one year of high school.
