Did you know?
In 1898, in the year that Joseph Lindenbaum was born, on February 15th, the USS Maine exploded and sank in Havana harbor. The reason for the explosion has never been found, but it killed 266 men. "Remember the Maine" became a rallying cry and precipitated the United States' declaration of war on Spain two months later - the beginning of the Spanish-American War. On December 10th, the war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris. The Treaty gave the U.S. Puerto Rico, the Philippines, Guam - for $20 million - and, temporarily, Cuba.
Did you know?
In 1942, by the time he was 44 years old, due to World War II, automobile production in the United States was stopped on February 1st. A tire rationing program had begun the month before. Detroit - the main hub of car manufacturing - was ordered to free up assembly lines for military production. The president of the Automobile Manufacturers Association said “The automotive industry is in this war all the way". Some dealerships had to close and others expanded their repair shops. The used car market boomed (as did a black market in used cars).

Merry White Christmas Wishes!
First performed by Bing Crosby (on radio) on Christmas in 1941, Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" has become a classic. Bing Crosby's version of the song has sold over 100 million copies and all versions of it have sold over 150 million copies! This is a clip from the 1942 film "Holiday Inn". It was the first time that the song appeared in a movie. Bing sings, of course (how can anyone imitate that voice!) but actress Marjorie Reynolds' voice is dubbed by Martha Mears. We hear this song every year at
