Luddites were primarily textile workers and weavers who thought that machinery was being used as a way to keep workers from achieving fair practices and wages.

In 1836, on October 22nd, Sam Houston was inaugurated as the first elected President of the Republic of Texas, which was formed in 1836 as a result of Texas' independence from Mexico. He served two years, per the Texas Constitution - subsequent Presidents could serve three years.

In 1843, on March 21st, the world didn't end! It was the first time that Baptist preacher William Miller predicted the Second Coming - he kept predicting it until his death in 1849.

In 1903, the book The Souls of Black Folk, written by W. E. B. Du Bois, was published. Containing several essays on the African-American experience in America, much of the book was based on Du Bois' own life. The book was one of the very early works in the science of sociology.

In 1916, in the year of Joseph Watson's passing, the U.S. National Park Service - part of the Department of the Interior - was created by an act of Congress in August. The Park Service was charged with the dual role of "preserving the ecological and historical integrity of the places entrusted to its management while also making them available and accessible for public use and enjoyment". The resources managed by the National Park Service have often been referred to as the "crown jewels" of the United States.
