In 1802, on May 22, 1802, the first First Lady of the United States, Martha (Dandridge) Custis Washington died of a severe fever at age 70. Martha was buried next to her husband George Washington, at Mt. Vernon.

In 1828, on April 20th, French explorer René Caillié became the first non-Muslim to enter Timbuktu and to later return alive. He gave Europeans a first hand description of the city. He was awarded a prize of 10,000 francs for his trip - offered by the Société de Géographie.

In 1858, in July, the "Fifty-Niners" began the Pike's Peak Gold Rush. Lasting until about 1861, gold fever hit western Kansas Territory and southwestern Nebraska Territory.

In 1904, the first underground line of the New York City subway system opened. London's underground system was opened in 1863 and Boston opened one in 1897, but New York quickly became the largest system in the U.S. More than 100,000 people paid 5 cents to ride under Manhattan that first day.

In 1918, in the year of Joseph William Stanton's passing, in July, Russian revolutionaries executed the former Tzar Nicholas II and his immediate family. While it was rumored that two of the children had survived, it was later proven through DNA analysis - when their bodies were found - that the entire family had been killed.
