In 1927, in the year that Ladora Kilpatrick was born, 10 years after the United States bought the U.S. Virgin Islands from the Danish government, the inhabitants were granted U.S. citizenship. While they can vote in congressional elections and presidential primaries, they cannot vote for President.

In 1935, by the time this person was just 8 years old, on August 14, the Social Security Act was signed into law. The purpose was to "provide federal assistance to those unable to work". The law established the Social Security Administration whose primary focus was to "provide aid for the elderly, the unemployed, and children". The Act survived many Supreme Court challenges and the Administration continues until today.

The History of Locomotives
The steam engine made self-powered transportation possible - and our romance with trains began. James Watt (a Scotsman) patented the design for a steam locomotive in 1784 and his employee, William Murdoch, made a working model of a self-propelled steam carriage soon after. Then, in 1804, an Englishman made a full scale steam locomotive - and a new industry was born.
