Daughter of Louis (Luigi) Branno and Teresa Conado. Was married to husband Joseph Marino and had multiple children, though where she married Joseph to this day is still not known (most probably in the USA), nor is where they met or how. There does seem to be a fairly large age gap between Joseph and Laura, however, Laura seems to be slightly older than her own official records state as at the time she was having her first child she would have been 14. Joseph was a traveling musician (harpist) and would play for the people on riverboats going up and down the Ohio River. As a result, he was away from home a good portion of the time leaving Laura alone. It is unclear if Laura had an affair with the next door neighbor on Water St. named John Williams, or if she and Joseph had technically already gone separate ways but kept appearances up. Divorce in this period of time was extremely uncommon. Either way, Laura bore John Williams (Guglielmo) a son named Michael Angelo Antonio Guglielmo (who frequently went in record sets by Tony or Anthony Marino). She helped mind 2 different boarding houses run by the Branno family, one at 116 W. Front St, and then at 308 West Water St. where she presumably cooked and cleaned for the 7 additional occupants as well as for her own children. She lived on Water St. until she passed away. The area in which they lived in Cincinnati was incredibly prone to flooding, and did so frequently (sometimes historically so). Life certainly wasn't easy, and without her I wouldn't be here.

Italian immigrant. I am attempting to find where in Italy she was born.
Early Life & Education

Was not educated; she could not read or write English (or Italian). Did SPEAK English. And Italian, of course. Name is most probably Lorita Maria Branno, but went by Laura here in the States.
Religious Beliefs

Roman Catholic. Attended the Sacred Heart for the Italian Congregation. Church was located on Broadway near 5th St. in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio. I have all known church records already.
Professional Career

She helped the Branno family run two (different) boarding houses in Cincinnati: One was located at 116 W. Front St., and the other was found at 308 W. Water St. Also domestic, taking care of children.

The Many Names of Laura Branno

This is a partial list of names that I have seen Laura Marino (nee Branno) listed as.

Some of these are Roman Catholic baptism and burial records, resulting in pseudo-Latinized names.

Cuozzo is misspelled on one record as Guozzo, and Melillo is misspelled as Milillo.

I have checked all bizarre/aberrant spellings in this list for additional records with little success. Brown is a hard one, though due to how common of a surname it is.

I've also seen Branno spelled Branna.

She passed of a massive stroke.

Laura's mother's surname changes a lot, depending on the record.

I believe it to most likely be Conado, based off of DNA matches (though variants seen written include: Congo, Canga, Conga).

This also states that her husband was Joseph Marino, but at the time she was staying with (and had a son with) John Williams (Giovanni di Guglielmo) who lived next door to them on Water Street.

RECORDS I AM MISSING

- MARRIAGE FOR LAURA BRANNO AND JOSEPH MARINO
(Lorita Branno di Giuseppe Marino)

I am fairly certain that they married here in the USA, and not in Italy.

Especially if their est. immigration dates are to be believed. It appears that Joseph immigrated first, and due to a rather large age difference between Laura and Joseph it would not have been possible for Laura to get married to Joseph prior to leaving Italy.

I also note that Jacinto Marino (Joseph and Laura's firstborn) was born in 1882, and I have the 1900 US Census (Cincinnati) which shows Laura and Joseph with several children. So Laura and Joseph would have had to have been married prior to 1882, and the first city directory that I have listing a BRANNO (Felix, in this case) is 1883.

I have looked in Cincinnati, Ohio in general, Kentucky and Louisiana (as there are family stories of "someone coming up through Louisiana", but no one in present day knows who that someone was -- I did not start seeing Branno records in Louisiana until 1900s).

Additionally, Joseph Marino was a traveling harpist and entertained people on the river boats that went up and down the Ohio river, so technically Joseph Marino could have met the Brannos anywhere that a boat went via the Ohio river. Which makes this all much harder.

IMMIGRATION

There was a fire on Ellis Island in 1897 ( see link:

. ) which seems to have destroyed ALL BRANNO immigration records for my family.

I have checked in Ancestry website, as well as the Ellis Island website proper.
While there are few Brannos present, even fewer of them are from Italy.

Branno is a place in Sweden, and so people of Swedish and even Finnish descent seem to also have it for a surname.

I have ZERO Branno immigration records.

NATURALIZATION

I have only been able to find a SINGLE Branno that attempted to naturalize in Cincinnati (see:

I believe this is probably Laura's father, Louis/Luigi (1834 birthday would have made him roughly 33 years old when Laura was born), but have no concrete way to tie this record to Laura's father yet.

There was a riot and resulting courthouse fire in Cincinnati that destroyed a lot of the Naturalization records.

DNA

Both my mother and I have taken Ancestry DNA tests.

My mother's test has also been uploaded to MyHeritage, GEDMatch.

I have contacted ALL Branno genetic matches that appear on my DNA Match list (of which there are only a scant 5 results). One is my mother, one is my first cousin, and the rest are 4th cousins.

My mom (who I speak to at least twice a day) knows nothing to where in Italy Laura Branno was born in, nor does my 1st cousin or 4th cousins.

A NOTE TO THOSE WHO MAY LOOK (Ancestral naming conventions)

Please be aware there are several ancestral names involved.

- Luigi/LOUIS Branno (there are at least 2 running around at the same time that are listed in the Williams Directories)
- Felix/Felice (sometimes seen spelled Phelix or variant): There are multiple people with this name as well

There are MULTIPLE TERESA/Theresa Brannos as well, which leads to great confusion as Laura Branno's mother is TERESA CONADO, but there is a Louis Branno from the 1880s (born to Laura's brother, Felix and wife Rose Mary Falotico) that married a Teresa (her surname is Roch/Roach (Iarocci)).

People confuse Laura's father and mother (Louis/Luigi Branno and Teresa/Theresa Conado/Congo/Canga) with Louis and Teresa Iarocci.

These two sets of people are not the same.
