Add Memories, Stories & Photos about Lewis

Mined coal as a child: My grandfather, Lewis Jenkins Hobbs, had a rough childhood in the anthracite coal fields of Pennsylvania. His mother died when he was very small, and his brutal alcoholic father shipped him off to relatives. The father later remarried and had another child, Wilfrid. Lewis married and had a son named John, then divorced. He later remarried, to my grandmother, Ida Mae Skiles Hobbs, and had one daughter, also named Ida Mae. In 1956, the family moved to California, where Lewis worked in the Winfield China pottery. He died of a sudden heart attack while on a fishing trip off Los Angeles. He is buried in Melrose Abbey Memorial Park in Anaheim, California. I do not know anything about his son from his first marriage, or any children that son might have had. I believe he has been dead for many years.
