In 1809, by the time she was 40 years old, on May 5th, Mary Dixon Kies (March 21, 1752 – 1837) became the first recipient of a patent granted to a woman by the United States. She had developed a technique for weaving straw with silk and thread to make hats. While her hats were popular at first, fashion changed and she died penniless.

In 1816, she was 47 years old when in Philadelphia, the African Methodist Episcopal Church - the oldest independent Protestant denomination in the world founded by black people - was established by Richard Allen and other African-American Methodists. It is often called the AME church today.

In 1826, at the age of 57 years old, Lorana was alive when on February 13th, the American Temperance Society was founded in Boston. In the beginning, the Temperance Society promoted abstaining from alcohol but with time it pushed for abolishing alcohol. Drinking was a severe stress on many families, with drunkenness contributing to poverty and abuse.

In 1835, by the time she was 66 years old, on January 8th, the U.S. Federal Government declared that President Andrew Jackson had paid off the national debt - for the first and only time.

In 1840, in the year of Lorana Blizard Blizard Shelhorn's passing, on February 6th, Māori chiefs and the British parliament signed the Treaty of Waitangi. The Treaty created a British governor of New Zealand and gave the Maori people the rights of British citizens.
