Did you know?
In 1905, in the year that Louise Spurlock was born, the first movie theater opened in the United States in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was the first theater to show nothing but movies - silent films. Two men, John P. Harris and his brother-in-law Harry Davis, opened the Nickelodeon on Smithfield Street - charging 5 cents for admission. The first day, 450 people watched movies at the new theater - on the second day, more than 1500 people stood in line to get in.
Did you know?
In 1922, at the age of 17 years old, Louise was alive when on June 22, coal miners in Herrin Illinois, were on strike (coal miners had been on strike nationally since April 1). The striking miners were outraged at the strikebreakers (scabs) that the company had brought in and laid siege to the mine. Three union workers were killed when gunfire was exchanged. The next day, union miners killed 23 strikebreakers and mine guards. No one, on either side, ever faced jail time.

Merry White Christmas Wishes!
First performed by Bing Crosby (on radio) on Christmas in 1941, Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" has become a classic. Bing Crosby's version of the song has sold over 100 million copies and all versions of it have sold over 150 million copies! This is a clip from the 1942 film "Holiday Inn". It was the first time that the song appeared in a movie. Bing sings, of course (how can anyone imitate that voice!) but actress Marjorie Reynolds' voice is dubbed by Martha Mears. We hear this song every year at
