1813 - She was merely 15 years old when on March 4th, President James Madison was inaugurated to his second term. Madison received 50.4% of the vote, defeating rival DeWitt Clinton.

1814 - She was 16 years old when on December 24th, the Treaty of Ghent was signed, officially ending the War of 1812 between Great Britain and the United States. It took 2 months for the news of the Treaty to reach the United States - in the meantime, the Battle of New Orleans was fought.

1824 - Lydia was 26 years old when on March 11th, the United States War Department created the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) as a part of the War Department - without authorization from Congress. It had previously been called the Office of Indian Trade.

1832 - By the time she was 34 years old, by February 12th, a cholera epidemic in London claimed at least 3,000 lives - it eventually killed 6,536. The epidemic spread to France and North America later in the year. Cholera is spread through contaminated food and water but at the time, it was thought to be spread by a "miasma” - a bad smell - in the air.

1869 - In the year of Lydia Bates's passing, on January 20th, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, speaking about women's rights - including the right to vote - was the first woman to testify before the US Congress. In May, she and Susan B. Anthony founded the National Woman Suffrage Association (NWSA).
