Ziegfeld was inspired by the Folies Bergère of Paris and the show was a step up from the then current vaudeville shows. For almost a quarter of a century, the Ziegfeld follies were the toast of Broadway.

1920 - She was only 13 years old when the Volstead Act became law. Formally called the National Prohibition Act, the Volstead Act enabled law enforcement agencies to carry out the 18th Amendment. The same summer, there were riots in Beaumont, Texas and Harlem, New York.

1954 - By the time she was 47 years old, on May 17th, the Supreme Court released a decision on Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka. The ruling stated that state laws establishing separate public schools for black and white students was unconstitutional thus paving the way for integration in schools.

1980 - In the year of Madge Berglund's passing, on December 8th, ex-Beatle John Lennon was shot and killed by Mark David Chapman in front of his home - the Dakota - in New York City. Chapman was found guilty of murder and still remains in jail.
