Composed the previous August by Francis Bellamy, it was to be recited in 15 seconds and originally read: "I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." "Under God" was added in the 1950's.

1909 - At the age of 17 years old, Manuel was alive when the NAACP was founded by W. E. B. Du Bois. The organization focused on legal strategies designed to confront the critical civil rights issues of the day - which included lynching and segregation in schools. A bystander saw her raise her arm, grabbed it, and the shot went wild.

1987 - In the year of Manuel Barrios's passing, was the first time that a criminal in the United States - a serial rapist - was convicted through the use of DNA evidence.
