1862 - In the year that Margaret Garnar was born, on August 17th, the Dakota War of 1862 began in Minnesota. Four Lakota Sioux - while hunting - killed five settlers near the Minnesota River. That evening, elders of the tribe decided to attack more settlements with the goal of driving out those who had settled the area. By the end of the year, 1000 Lakota had been jailed.

1871 - At the age of only 9 years old, Margaret was alive when on July 20th, British Columbia became the 6th province of Canada. While Vancouver is the largest city in British Columbia, Victoria was chosen as the capital..

1898 - Margaret was 36 years old when magnate and philanthropist John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil Company controlled 84% of the oil and pipelines in the United States. Rockefeller grew Standard Oil through the merger of several other small oil companies throughout the U.S., creating a monopoly.

1942 - At the age of 80 years old, Margaret was alive when on June 17th, Roosevelt approved the Manhattan Project, which lead to the development of the first atomic bomb. With the support of Canada and the United Kingdom, the Project came to employ more than 130,000 people and cost nearly $2 billion. Julius Robert Oppenheimer, a nuclear physicist born in New York, led the Los Alamos Laboratory that developed the actual bomb. The first artificial nuclear explosion took place near Alamogordo New Mexico on July 16, 1945.

1946 - In the year of Margaret Garnar's passing, pediatrician Dr. Benjamin Spock's book "The Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care" was published. It sold half a million copies in the first six months. Aside from the Bible, it became the best selling book of the 20th century. A generation of Baby Boomers were raised by the advice of Dr. Spock.
