    Mark Winestock Junior was born in Greenville South Carolina on July 19, 1931 to Mark Winestock Senior and Ruth (Townes) Winestock who were both born in 1911. He had one brother, and grew up in Washington DC. He married Angeline Patricia Pryor (1932-2011). Mark and Angeline had a son and daughter together. Mark passed away in March of 1984.

In 1931, in the year that Mark Winestock was born, in March, “The Star Spangled Banner” officially became the national anthem by congressional resolution. Other songs had previously been used - among them, "My Country, 'Tis of Thee", "God Bless America", and "America the Beautiful". There was fierce debate about making "The Star Spangled Banner" the national anthem - Southerners and veterans organizations supported it, pacifists and educators opposed it.
