And the songs had to be under 4 and a half minutes!

Two men, John P. Harris and his brother-in-law Harry Davis, opened the Nickelodeon on Smithfield Street - charging 5 cents for admission. The first day, 450 people watched movies at the new theater - on the second day, more than 1500 people stood in line to get in.

It became the most popular cartoon of its day.

1943 - He was 41 years old when on March 31st, the Broadway musical Oklahoma! opened. Written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II (the first of their string of successful collaborations), audiences loved it. The musical ran for 2,212 performances originally and was made into a movie in 1954.

1967 - In the year of Marshall Philpitt's passing, on October 2nd, Thurgood Marshall was sworn in as the first black US Supreme Court justice.
