1906 - In the year that Mary J Applewhite was born, Finland became the first European country to give women the vote and to allow them to run for political office. (Women in Australia and New Zealand already had that right but couldn't run for office.) Although Finland belonged to the Russian Empire, there was great unrest and the Tsar wanted to broker a quick peace. As a part of the brokered peace, women got the vote.

1959 - She was 53 years old when on August 8th, Hawaii became the 50th state of the United States. The US flag was changed to show 50 stars.

1966 - At the age of 60 years old, Mary was alive when on July 1st, Medicare became available after President Johnson signed into law the Medicare Act in 1965. President Truman had received the first Medicare card since he had been the first to propose national healthcare law. insurance.

1989 - At the age of 83 years old, Mary was alive when on November 9th, the Berlin Wall fell. The Wall was built by the East Germans to keep East Berliners from escaping into West Berlin, separating families and friends. When the head of the East German Communist Party announced that day that East Berliners could cross whenever they pleased, happy crowds surged across the border. People brought tools and took parts of the hated wall.

1992 - In the year of Mary J Applewhite's passing, in April, Bosnia-Herzegovina declared independence from Yugoslavia.
