1820 - In the year that Mary N Crandall was born, volcano Mount Rainier, near Tacoma and Seattle, erupted. Between 1820 and 1894, there were at least 14 eruptions reported - most of them probably just ash and dust clouds.

1824 - At the age of just 4 years old, Mary was alive when on March 11th, the United States War Department created the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) as a part of the War Department - without authorization from Congress. It had previously been called the Office of Indian Trade.

1862 - By the time she was 42 years old, on February 22nd, Jefferson Davis was inaugurated as President of the Confederate States of America. His term was to be for 6 years.

1876 - When she was 56 years old, on February 14th, Alexander Graham Bell applied for a patent for the telephone. So did Elisha Gray. A month later, on March 7th, Bell was granted the patent and on the 10th, he made his first successful telephone call - in which he said: "Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you."

1896 - In the year of Mary N Crandall's passing, on May 18th, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a ruling in the case of Plessy v. Ferguson. By a vote of 7 to 1, the Court upheld state racial segregation laws, introducing the idea of "separate but equal" facilities for races.
