Mary Norris died in 1909 in Fscray, Australia at age 69. She was born in 1840. She was born to Oneill William Norris and Bridget Kennedy Norris.

In 1840, in the year that Mary Norris was born, on May 7th, the Great Natchez Tornado hit Mississippi. Around 2p, the second deadliest tornado in U.S. history hit Natchez and the surrounding area. It has been estimated to be a F4 or F5 storm and over 317 people were killed - 109 were injured.

In 1867, she was 27 years old when on February 17th, the first ship passed through the newly completed Suez Canal. The Canal allowed ships to travel more quickly - and a shorter distance - between the North Atlantic and northern Indian Oceans.

In 1873, she was 33 years old when on September 18th, the New York stock market crash - due to the failure of a number of banks - began the Panic of 1873. After the boom following the Civil War, the Coinage Act of 1873 and other factors led to the market crash. Thus began the "Long Depression" - also called the "Great Depression" until the 1930's.

In 1897, Mary was 57 years old when on March 4th, William McKinley became the 25th President of the United States. He had beaten William Jennings Bryan in the 1896 election by 51% to 46.7% in the popular vote. Six months into his second term as President, McKinley was assassinated.

In 1909, in the year of Mary Norris's passing, the U.S. penny was changed to the Abraham Lincoln design. The Lincoln penny was so popular that it soon had to be rationed and it sold on the secondary market for a quarter. Abraham Lincoln was the first historical figure to be on a U.S. coin - which was released to commemorate his 100th birthday. This penny was also the first U.S. cent to include the words "In God We Trust.".
