In 1850, Mendel was just 5 years old when on April 4th, the city of Los Angeles - now the 2nd most populous city in the US - was incorporated. On April 15th, the city of San Francisco - now the 15h most populous city in the US - was incorporated. Both cities were incorporated before California became a state.

In 1881, at the age of 36 years old, Mendel was alive when on October 26th, the "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral" happened in Tombstone, Arizona. Two of the Earp brothers and Doc Holliday were wounded.

In 1903, in the year of Mendel Fritz's passing, the silent film, The Great Train Robbery opened. Although it was filmed in Milltown, New Jersey, it was a Western. Twelve minutes long, the film used a lot of innovative techniques - some scenes were hand colored and composite editing, on-location shooting, and frequent camera movement were used. Its budget was $150 (about $4000 currently) and was the most popular film until 1915 when Birth of a Nation was released.
