Miguel Colom-Aviles was born on December 25, 1914 in Ponce, Puerto Rico to parents Bartolome Colom Torres (1869-1936) and Angela Aviles (1898-1975). He grew up in a big family with siblings Cataline, Bartolome, Antonia, Isabel, Angela, Maria, Gloria, Modesta, Roberta, Vicente, and others. He lived in Pellejas, Adjuntas, Puerto Rico and Miguel enlisted in the military on 9 September 1944, during World War II. He was enlisted as a Private in the Selectees (Enlisted Men) and had no branch assignment at the time. Miguel served in the US Army during World War II and was designated as a Technician 4 (Tec 4). He served until 8 April 1946, when he was discharged from the military. He was married to Emilia Gonzalez Perez (1915-1996) and they had 5 children together including Evangelina Colom Gonzalez (1944-1990).
