In 1906, at the age of only 9 years old, Miguel was alive when author Upton Sinclair exposed the public-health threat of the meat-packing industry in his book The Jungle. There was such an outcry that legislation was passed to regulate meat packing. Sinclair said " "I aimed at the public's heart, and by accident I hit it in the stomach."

In 1927, Miguel was 30 years old when 10 years after the United States bought the U.S. Virgin Islands from the Danish government, the inhabitants were granted U.S. citizenship. While they can vote in congressional elections and presidential primaries, they cannot vote for President.
