1914 - By the time she was only 9 years old, in August, the Panama Canal opened to traffic. Begun by the French in the 1880's and abandoned, the United States undertook further construction in 1904. Because of the realistic nature of the "news," there was a public outcry the next day, calling for regulation by the FCC.
