Mrs. Asa (Rose Carr) Neal Photos

ADVERTISEMENT BY ANCESTRY.COM
In front is Madeline Neal, daughter of Rose (Carr) Neal, who is behind her. Next to Rose is her sister, Elsie (Carr) Tyree. In the rear are John Edwin Carr, Rose's son; Priscilla (Sheeks) Carr, and George W. Carr, her husband, both of whom raised John. From a shadow, I believe George is smoking a pipe.

I have always been struck at how sad Elsie looks in these pictures, and believe it was because she realized that she and her husband would not have children. Madeline Neal, Elsie's little niece, is in the front row facing the dog. In the back from left to right, are John I. Tyree, a farmer, his wife Elsie (Carr), and her sister, Rose (Carr) Neal.

Little Madeline (9 Oct 1914-15 Oct 1997), whom I estimate was about 3 here, is standing in front of her mother, Rose (Carr) Neal (18 Mar 1878-8 Feb 1958). On the left is son Clyde A. Neal (1907-30 Nov 1931). Asa Neal (23 Sep 1877-10 April 1937) is next. On the right is Roy E. Neal (1904-1955). Asa and Rose's eldest child was Albert (22 April 1901-25 Jan 1906). They all are buried at the Sheeks Cemetery in Mitchell, except Madeline who is buried with her husband (Kenneth Tanksley) at the City Cemetery in Mitchell.

I do not know the identity of the tall lady on the left. Based on her height, the only ones that come to my mind is that she could be George & Stella (Bass) Fields's daughter or Mrs. Albert W. (Pearl Chapman) Sheeks or Mrs. Mallie (Pauline Carr) Carmichael. Next to her is Rose (Carr) Neal, then Rose's new daughter-in-law, Erma G. (Horvath) Carr, and lastly Bertha (Sheeks) Williams.

Those whom I can identify are as follows: In the lower right hand corner is Madeline Neal. The adults are Beulah White who would become Roy Neal's wife; John Edwin Carr, Roy's half brother; and Rose (Carr) Neal, their mother, on the right, behind Madeline. George Fields is the elderly gentleman stooping down in front of the tree.

The picture was captioned on the back, "A Day By The River." I presume it was the White River. The two boys sitting in the front row are unknown. The elderly man behind the boys is George Fields. The man beside the boys is Asa Neal. Next to him is Madeline Neal. In the last row are Clyde Neal, Rose (Carr) Neal, Roy Neal, Beulah White who became Mrs. Roy Neal, Marie? Fields, Gladys Fields, and Ellen? Fields, whom I presume are George Fields's daughters.

The new bride meets her husband's relatives. The groom, John Edwin Carr, probably took this picture. On the left is his step-father, Asa Neal; then Carl Williams, Bertha's husband; Bertha (Sheeks) Williams; the young man resembles Carl Williams, so I am assuming he is his younger brother; Erma (Horvath) Carr, the bride; Rose (Carr) Neal, Erma's mother-in-law; .... Bass, the daughter of Stella (Bass) Fields, next to her, and George Fields, behind Stella; another George Fields, the widower of Mary (Sheeks); and Halbert Sheeks on the right. I know none of the children except Madeline Neal, who is shading her eyes, and is in front of Erma Carr.

Madeline, while pregnant with her third child, had had to have her leg amputated due to bone cancer. Eventually she was fitted with a wooden leg prosthesis. She went on to have two more children, and was a wonderful mother, wife, and daughter. She and her husband, Kenneth Tanksley, had been married nearly sixty-four years when he died. Kenneth (8 Oct 1906-4 March 1995) was the son of William and Ada (Martin) Tanksley. I remember him taking my family when I was a little girl on a tour, in his capacity as a park ranger at the Spring Mill State Park in Mitchell.

The five generations include: Roy Neal, on the left, son of Rose (Carr) Neal, holding a baby, representing the fifth generation; Priscilla (Sheeks) Carr, mother of Rose (Carr) Neal, representing the first generation; Rose (Carr) Neal, representing the second generation, with a little girl in front of her, representing the fifth generation; George William Neal, representing the fourth generation. Note: I do not think that the children that Roy and Rose are holding are George William's children.

These are four of Kenneth & Madeline (Neal) Tanksley's five children with Madeline's mother Rose (Carr) Neal. The eldest son, James N. Tanksley, is not in the picture. It is believed that it is Frank sitting in front. Behind him is his brother William with Virginia Sue on the left and Priscilla Rose on the right.
