In 1815, on January 18th, the Battle of New Orleans ended. General Andrew Jackson defeated a much larger invading British force in the last major battle of the War of 1812. This was after the Treaty of Ghent - signed the previous December - ended the war. But the news didn't reach the U.S. until February and the Treaty was ratified by Congress the same month. So the battle had no impact on the war.

In 1872, on March 1st, Yellowstone National Park became the first national park in the U.S. and perhaps the world's first national park. Established by Congress and signed into law by President Grant, Yellowstone is one of the most spectacular areas in the U.S., filled with natural wonders and wildlife.

In 1889, on April 22nd, at "high noon," about 50,000 people took off to claim open lands in the Land Rush of 1889. Called the "Unassigned Lands," part or all of 6 counties in Oklahoma were up for grabs. By the end of the day, Oklahoma City and Guthrie were created - each with about 10,000 inhabitants.

In 1940, in July, Billboard published its first Music Popularity Chart. Top recordings of the year were Tommy Dorsey's "I'll Never Smile Again" (vocal Frank Sinatra) - 12 weeks at the top, Bing Crosby's "Only Forever" - 9 weeks at the top, and Artie Shaw's "Frenesi" - 12 weeks at the top.

In 1959, in the year of Neville John Wylie's passing, on August 8th, Hawaii became the 50th state of the United States. The US flag was changed to show 50 stars.
