In 1801, when he was 53 years old, on January 1st, after a brief period of independence, Ireland was merged with Great Britain, creating The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.

In 1802, at the age of 54 years old, Niels was alive when on March 16, Congress established the United States Military Academy at West Point - the oldest of the five service academies in the United States and one of the oldest service academies in the world.

In 1803, Niels was 55 years old when on October 20th, Congress ratified the Louisiana Purchase. The United States agreed to pay France $15 million for the Louisiana Territory - an area of about 830,000 sq miles. This one act doubled the size of the United States.

In 1804, he was 56 years old when on July 11th, Alexander Hamilton, former Secretary of the Treasury, and Aaron Burr, Vice President of the United States, fought a duel. Alexander Hamilton was shot and died the next day. Burr was indicted for murder and was acquitted but his political career was ruined.

In 1805, in the year of Niels Dulsrud)dæhle Larsen's passing, on October 21st, Lord Nelson defeated the French and Spanish fleets in the Battle of Trafalgar in Spain. 33 British ships fought 41 ships from Spain and France. The Franco-Spanish fleet lost 22 ships while the British lost none. The battle ended plans to invade Great Britain.
