Add Olive's birthday or the date she died to see a list of historic events that occurred during Olive's lifetime.

In 1848, on May 29th, Wisconsin became the 30th U.S. state. The British had formerly owned the territory but after the War of 1812, American white settlers - especially lead miners - moved into the area.

In 1862, on January 30th, the USS Monitor - an iron hulled steamship - was launched. It was the first of its kind in the United States and was built in response to the rumor that the Confederate states were building an ironclad ship - the CSS Virginia.

In 1896, in April, the first study on global warming due to CO2 - carbon dioxide - in the atmosphere was published by Swedish scientist Svante Arrhenius. Arrhenius concluded that human activity due to the Industrial Revolution would amplify CO2 in the atmosphere, causing a greenhouse effect. His conclusions have been extensively tested in the ensuing 100+ years and are still seen to hold true.

In 1927, 10 years after the United States bought the U.S. Virgin Islands from the Danish government, the inhabitants were granted U.S. citizenship. While they can vote in congressional elections and presidential primaries, they cannot vote for President.

In 1931, in the year of Olive Huff Jackson's passing, in March, “The Star Spangled Banner” officially became the national anthem by congressional resolution. Other songs had previously been used - among them, "My Country, 'Tis of Thee", "God Bless America", and "America the Beautiful". There was fierce debate about making "The Star Spangled Banner" the national anthem - Southerners and veterans organizations supported it, pacifists and educators opposed it.
