In 1923, in the year that Ollie J Creech was born, Harlem's Cotton Club opened in New York City. Owned by a bootlegger and gangster, it was a 700 seat speakeasy that catered to a "white only" clientele. But most of the entertainers were African-American and featured some of the best entertainers of the time such as Lena Horne, the Nicholas Brothers, Ethel Waters, and Cab Calloway.

In 1933, on March 4th, Franklin Delano Roosevelt became the 32nd President of the United States. Some of the major programs that survive from his presidency are the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Wagner Act (The National Labor Relations Act of 1935) , the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and Social Security.

In 1947, on November 25th, the Hollywood "Black List" was created by the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC).
