In 1885, in the year that Pearl Jones was born, Germany's Karl Benz built the Benz Patent-Motorwagen, which had an internal combustion engine. It is considered to be the world's first automobile. The Benz cost $150 - just under $4,000 in today's money.

In 1891, she was only 6 years old when James Naismith, at the Springfield Massachusetts YMCA, invented the game of basketball. Originally using two peach baskets and a soccer ball, he created the game to keep his students active during the long, harsh New England winters.

In 1911, when she was 26 years old, the Triangle Shirtwaist fire occurred, one of the deadliest industrial disasters in U.S. history. 146 workers (123 women and 23 men, many of them recent Jewish and Italian immigrants) died from the fire or by jumping to escape the fire and smoke. The garment factory was on the 8th, 9th, and 10th floors of a building in Greenwich Village in Manhattan. Doors to stairwells and exits had been locked in order to prevent workers from taking unauthorized breaks and to prevent theft, so they couldn't escape by normal means when the fire broke out. Due to the disaster, legislation was passed to protect sweatshop workers.

In 1942, by the time she was 57 years old, on November 28th at 10:15p, a nightclub in Boston, the Cocoanut Grove, caught fire. The disaster was so shocking that it replaced World War II in the headlines and lead to reforms in safety standards and codes.

In 1967, in the year of Pearl Jones's passing, on October 2nd, Thurgood Marshall was sworn in as the first black US Supreme Court justice.
