In 1816, in the year that Persis Fayette Eastman Stephenson was born, in July, Lord Byron, Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin, Percy Bysshe Shelley and John Polidori were vacationing in Switzerland, talking about the occult. They challenged each other to write the best horror story they could. Mary (Godwin) Shelley wrote "Frankenstein" - which came to her in a dream. Polidori wrote the short story The Vampyre.

In 1865, on January 31st, the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution was narrowly passed by the House (it was passed by the Senate over nine months earlier). The 13th Amendment outlawed slavery and involuntary servitude - the exception being for punishment for a crime.

In 1885, on January 24th, the Fenians - Irish Nationalists - set off dynamite bombs in the House of Commons chamber, Westminster Hall, and the Tower of London. Four civilians and two policemen were injured.

In 1953, on July 27th, the Korean Armistice Agreement was signed. The Armistice was to last until "a final peaceful settlement is achieved". No peaceful settlement has ever been agreed upon.

In 1992, on April 29th, riots began in Los Angeles after the "Rodney King" verdict was issued. Four LAPD officers had been accused of using excessive force (assault) on African-American Rodney King, who had been stopped for drunk driving. The beating had been videotaped. Their acquittal sparked a 6 day riot in Los Angeles.
