  • Introduction

Ronald Francis Simson, (died on 14 September 1914, aged 24) was a Scottish rugby union player for Scotland. Simson was the first rugby international - of any nationality - to die in the war. He was killed in the First Battle of the Aisne, which was the Allied follow-up offensive against the right wing of the German First Army (led by Alexander von Kluck) & Second Army (led by Karl von Bülow) as they retreated after the First Battle of the Marne earlier in September 1914. He was a lieutenant with the Royal Field Artillery. He played for London Scottish, a team especially hard hit because many of them joined the London Scottish regiment. Of the 60 players selected to play for the club's four teams on the last match day before the war, 45 would give their live. Simson was capped for Scotland in 1911 scoring a try on his debut, and only appearance for Scotland, during their loss to England at Twickenham. Simson would be the first of 13 players of the 30 to have played in that fixture to be killed during WWI.
