1803 - In the year that Rachel Hollingsworth was born, the first public library in the United States - free to everyone - opened in Salisbury, Connecticut. Damage to books was most often caused by "greasing" - candle wax dripping onto the books. Candles were the only source of light in the evenings.

1818 - She was merely 15 years old when on March 22nd, Easter Day fell on the earliest possible date in western Christianity. This won't happen again until 2285.

1840 - She was 37 years old when on February 6th, Māori chiefs and the British parliament signed the Treaty of Waitangi. The Treaty created a British governor of New Zealand and gave the Maori people the rights of British citizens.

1842 - When she was 39 years old, in January, William E. Clarke - a medical student at Berkshire Medical College - became the first person to use an inhaled anesthetic. He administered the anesthetic to pull a tooth.

1874 - In the year of Rachel Hollingsworth's passing, on November 4th, the Democratic Party regained control of the US House of Representatives - the first time since 1860. The Democrats now held 183 seats - up 94 - and the Republicans held 106 - down 93.
