He married Bernice Lillian (Hogenson) Stevens on June 20, 1933 in Elkton, Cecil County, Maryland, and they were married until Bernice's death on November 21, 1989. Ralph Stevens died at age 94 years old on May 27, 2004 in Walla Walla, WA.

    Three of Ralph's grandparents (his maternal grandmother, Johanne Louisa Magdalene Deutschle, 1845-1898; and both paternal grandparents--August Friedrich Schwantz, 1828-1921 and Henriette Sophie Krueger, 1833-1910) immigrated directly from Prussia and the fourth (Henry William/Henrich Wilhelm Goetsch, 1845-1901) was the son of immigrants from Prussia (Wilhelm Friedrich August Goetsch, 1820-1902 and Charlotte Marie Dorothea Liermann, 1819-1899).

    Ralph was born in Juneau, Wisconsin in 1909, the second son of Frances L. Goetsch (1877-1968) and Theodore F. Schwantz (1861-1910). His father about 10 months after Ralph was born, due to uremia stemming from a back injury in 1909 that had left him paralyzed below the waist. Theodore had been part owner of a general store. After his father's death, Ralph, his brother Francis, and his mother had to sell their stake in the store and took in lodgers at their house.

    Ralph attended college at the University of Wisconsin and medical school at the University of Pennsylvania.

    Ralph served as a flight surgeon in World War II; he was stationed in Indianapolis, Indiana.
  • Professional Career

    Ralph became an ophthalmologist and bought a medical practice in Walla Walla, Washington, where he moved with his wife Bernice (Bunny) and children. He continued practicing medicine there in partnership with his brother-in-law, Cliff Hogenson, until his mid-80s.

On a trip to Egypt, the owner of this camel offered to take a photo of Ralph on top of it. He then refused to let Ralph get off until Ralph paid him for the photo. Ralph was unhappy about having been misled and decided to use the photo in all of his Christmas cards that year.
