Doyle eventually wrote 4 novels and 56 short stories with Holmes as the main character.

1898 - At the age of merely 7 years old, Raymond was alive when magnate and philanthropist John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil Company controlled 84% of the oil and pipelines in the United States. Four years later, there were 600 commercial stations broadcasting in the U.S.

1923 - At the age of 32 years old, Raymond was alive when on September 1, an earthquake - the Great Kanto earthquake - destroyed one-third of Tokyo. 1925 - In the year of Raymond Atwater's passing, in July, the Scopes Trial - often called the Scopes Monkey Trial - took place, prosecuting a substitute teacher for teaching evolution in school. Tennessee had enacted a law that said it was "unlawful to teach human evolution in any state-funded school". William Jennings Bryan headed the prosecution and Clarence Darrow headed the defense. The teacher was found guilty and fined $100. An appeal to the Supreme Court of Tennessee upheld the law but overturned the guilty verdict.
