In 1800, in the year that Reuben Coles was born, Alessandro Volta presented his findings about the first electrical battery, proving that electricity could be generated chemically and debunking the widely held theory that electricity was generated solely by living beings.

In 1825, at the age of 25 years old, Reuben was alive when on August 18th, the Panic of 1825 began in London and spread to Europe, Latin America, and the United States. It affected Great Britain most strongly, leading to the closing of six banks in London and 60 banks in the country. Scottish adventurer - and trickster - Gregor MacGregor had invented a fictional Latin American country called Poyais and persuaded others to invest in the "country". The loss of funds on the part of banks and others began the panic.

In 1836, at the age of 36 years old, Reuben was alive when on February 23rd, the Battle of the Alamo began. A group of American settlers were surrounded by the Mexican Army, led by Santa Anna, at the Alamo. The battle lasted until March 6th - all of the settler army was killed. Historians estimate that 400–600 in the Mexican Army were killed.

In 1857, at the age of 57 years old, Reuben was alive when on October 13th, New York banks closed due to the Panic of 1857. The banks didn't reopen until December 12th.

In 1870, in the year of Reuben Coles's passing, on October 6th, Rome became the capital of the unified states of the Italian Peninsula - the newly created Kingdom of Italy.
