Timeline

1812 - By the time he was 48 years old, on June 1st, U.S. President James Madison asked the U.S. Congress to declare war on the United Kingdom. Thus began the War of 1812. Great Britain tried to avert the war as they saw it as a way for the U.S. to annex Canada - and they were simultaneously involved in a war with France.

1814 - By the time he was 50 years old, on September 14th, Francis Scott Key wrote what we now know as the lyrics of the Star-Spangled Banner while he watched the British attack on Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor. He originally wrote a poem titled "Defence of Fort M'Henry". The lyrics of the poem were then set to the tune of a popular English song. It wasn't until 1931 that the song became the official national anthem of the United States.

1824 - He was 60 years old when the name Australia, recommended by Matthew Flinders in 1804, was adopted as the official name of the country once known variously as New Holland, New Wales, and New South Wales.

1834 - When he was 70 years old, on August 14th, the Poor Law Amendment Act was enacted in the United Kingdom. The Act stated that no able-bodied British man could receive assistance unless he entered a workhouse (a kind of poorhouse). The Act was intended to curb the cost of relief for the poor since workhouses were designed to be unpleasant. Many workhouses used the men as free labor and employed them in such tasks as breaking stones, crushing bones to produce fertilizer, or picking oakum - tarred fiber used between planks on ships -using a large metal nail known as a spike.

1839 - In the year of Richard of Bingham, 2nd Earl of Lucan's passing, on January 2nd, the first photo of the Moon was taken by Louis Daguerre, known as the "father of photography". The following June, he applied for and got a patent for his camera - to which France acquired the rights in exchange for a lifetime pension for Louis and his co-inventor's nephew. The camera was available to the public by September. It cost 400 francs (about $50 US then, almost $1270 today) and weighed 120 pounds.
