In 1841, in the year that Richard William Collins was born, on March 4th, William Henry Harrison was inaugurated as the ninth President of the United States. On April 4th, President Harrison died of pneumonia, becoming the first President who died in office - as well as the American president with the shortest term ever served. Vice-President John Tyler immediately became the tenth President of the United States.

In 1859, at the age of 18 years old, Richard was alive when on February 14th, Oregon became the 33rd U.S. state. In its state constitution, Oregon included a "whites only" clause although it was never enforced.

In 1863, at the age of 22 years old, Richard was alive when on June 20th, West Virginia was admitted as the 35th state of the United States. West Virginia was formed when the pro-Union citizens in northwest Virginia wanted to separate from Virginia - which had joined the Confederacy.

In 1889, when he was 48 years old, on May 31st, the South Fork Dam collapsed. Located in western Pennsylvania, the dam failed - sending more than 20 million tons of water into the towns below it. The flood killed more than 2,200 people in and around Johnstown. The newly formed Red Cross responded to the disaster.

In 1902, in the year of Richard William Collins's passing, about 150 thousand United Mine Workers went on strike in eastern Pennsylvania for a wage increase and more suitable hours. They eventually got a 10% raise and their workday was reduced from 10 hours to 9. Because winter was coming and most people at the time heated their homes with coal, President Teddy Roosevelt arbitrated between the owners and the workers - the first time that the Federal government arbitrated in a strike.
