    Robert A Shireling was born to Charles A. Shireling (1868 - 1925) and Phoebe Anne Parks (1869 - 1954). Both of his parents were born in Michigan. Robert Shireling married Mary Elizabeth Chamberlain (1910 - 1987) on June 25, 1927 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. They had two children, a son and a daughter. A veteran of World War II, Robert served from 1940 to November of 1946.

In 1905, in the year that Robert A Shireling was born, the first movie theater opened in the United States in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was the first theater to show nothing but movies - silent films. Two men, John P. Harris and his brother-in-law Harry Davis, opened the Nickelodeon on Smithfield Street - charging 5 cents for admission. The first day, 450 people watched movies at the new theater - on the second day, more than 1500 people stood in line to get in.
