In 1876, in the year that Robert Bowness Clark was born, on June 4th, the Transcontinental Express - an express train - arrived in San Francisco, using the 7 year old transcontinental railroad line. It took 83 hours and 39 minutes from New York City - about 3.5 days - to cross the country.

In 1880, Robert was merely 4 years old when on February 2nd the city of Wabash, Indiana became the third city in the world to be lit by electricity.

In 1893, in the year of Robert Bowness Clark's passing, on February 1st, Thomas Edison's motion picture studio on his laboratory grounds in West Orange New Jersey was completed. The studio was called "Black Maria" and the first movie made and viewed in it was of 3 people pretending to be blacksmiths.
