In 1810, in the year that Robert E. Lankford was born, on September 23rd, the Republic of West Florida - now the eastern part of Louisiana - declared independence from Spain. The Republic lasted only a few months - until the United States annexed it later in the same year.

In 1821, at the age of only 11 years old, Robert was alive when on August 10th, Missouri was admitted as the 24th U.S. state. Once part of the Louisiana Purchase, the Missouri Territory had petitioned to become a state in 1818 but because slavery was an issue in the US at the time, the territory's request was controversial. With the Missouri Compromise of 1820 - which made Maine a free state and Missouri a slave state - Missouri was admitted to the US.

In 1839, at the age of 29 years old, Robert was alive when in The Boston Morning Post, on March 23rd, the first recorded use of the word "OK" appeared. A columnist in the paper said this: "The "Chairman of the Committee on Charity Lecture Bells, is one of the deputation, and perhaps if he should return to Boston, via Providence, he of the Journal, and his train-band, would have his 'contribution box,' et ceteras, o.k.—all correct—and cause the corks to fly, like sparks, upward." While this is the first known time that OK appeared in print, where the word came from is still disputed.

In 1857, Robert was 47 years old when on March 4th, James Buchanan became the 15th President of the United States. Called a "doughface" by many - a Northerner with Southern sympathies - he said that he would only serve one term and he did what he said.

In 1879, in the year of Robert E. Lankford's passing, on October 22nd, Thomas Edison tested the first practical electric light bulb. Lasting 13½ hours before burning out, it used a "a carbon filament or strip coiled and connected to platina contact wires". He applied for a patent on November 4th, receiving the patent in January 1880.
