STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Former Staten Island resident Rosemary O'Gara Clever, 83, of Holiday, Fla., family matriarch, died Jan. 25 at home.

Born Rosemary Greene in St. George, she graduated from Curtis High School.

She lived in Westerleigh for 15 years, and briefly in Randall Manor, before moving to Safety Harbor, Fla., in 1999. She relocated to Holiday, Fla., in 2015.

Also a homemaker, Mrs. O'Gara Clever worked at Clove Lakes Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, Castleton Corners, for 17 years. She retired in 1996.

She enjoyed taking road trips with her husband and spending time with family.

She was a parishioner of St. Michael the Archangel R.C. Church, Safety Harbor, Fla.

She is survived by her husband of 16 years, William J. Clever; her daughters, Patricia Kessler and Maureen Merz; her brothers, Denis and John Greene; her sisters, Catherine Godwin and Nellie Galasso; two grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.


A memorial service is planned for April 9 in St. Peter's R.C. Church, New Brighton. Arrangements, including cremation, were handled by Coastal Cremations, New Port Richey, Fla.

In 1932, in the year that Rosemary (Greene) O'Gara Clever was born, on February 27th, actress Elizabeth Taylor was born in London. Her parents were Americans living in London and when she was 7, the family moved to Los Angeles. Her first small part in a movie was in There's One Born Every Minute in 1942 but her first starring role was in National Velvet in 1944. She became as famous for her 8 marriages (to 7 people) as she was for her beauty and films.

In 1955, by the time she was 23 years old, on September 10th the TV show "Gunsmoke" debuted on CBS. It went on to be television's longest-running western. Matt Dillon, Chester, Doc Adams, and Miss Kitty became household names.

In 1976, when she was 44 years old, The United States celebrated the Bicentennial of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. It was a year long celebration, with the biggest events taking place on July 4th.

In 1987, she was 55 years old when on October 19th, stock exchanges around the world crashed. Beginning in Hong Kong then spreading to Europe, the crash then hit the United States. It was called Black Monday. The Dow Jones fell 508 points to 1,738.74 (22.61%).

In 1999, by the time she was 67 years old, the fear that Y2K (year 2000) would cause the failure of computers worldwide when clocks didn't properly update to January 1st, 2000 became near panic. While some computer systems and software did have problems, the panic was unfounded and computer life went on.
