In 1804, on December 2nd, Napoleon was crowned as Emperor of France. It was a spectacular ceremony - even the Pope attended - and Napoleon and Josephine's garments were expensive and lavish. Napoleon lifted the crown to his own head, effectively naming himself Emperor. After the actual coronation, street musicians and peddlers entertained the crowds in the streets.

In 1817, on March 4th, James Monroe was sworn in as the fifth President of the United States. He had run against Rufus King and won 68.2% of the popular vote.

In 1853, on March 4th, Franklin Pierce became the 14th President of the United States. His son had been killed in a train accident that also involved Pierce and his wife on January 6 - the only of 3 sons to survive until then. Due to the resultant depression and his unpopular policies, he was not re-nominated for President and served only one term.

In 1867, on March 1st, Nebraska became the 37th state in the United States. Due to the Homestead Act, settlers had flooded into the area and the first wave of settlers was so large that Nebraska was immediately able to apply for statehood.

In 1904, in the year of Samuel Kirkland's passing, the United States acquired the Panama Canal Zone. Now an unincorporated territory of the U.S., the Canal Zone had been previously held by the French, who were constructing a canal. The U.S. took over the construction of the Panama Canal and it was finally finished in 1914, when it was opened to commercial shipping. The United States held the Canal Zone until 1979.
