In 1815, in the year that Samuel Swaim was born, on January 18th, the Battle of New Orleans ended. General Andrew Jackson defeated a much larger invading British force in the last major battle of the War of 1812. This was after the Treaty of Ghent - signed the previous December - ended the war. But the news didn't reach the U.S. until February and the Treaty was ratified by Congress the same month. So the battle had no impact on the war.

In 1821, on September 28th, the Declaration of Independence of the Mexican Empire from Spain was proclaimed, following the Mexican War of Independence.

In 1834, on July 15th, the Spanish Inquisition - which began in the 15th century - was abolished by the royal decree of Isabella II. The last known person to be hung by the Inquisition was Cayetano Ripoll - in 1826 - who was a school teacher. He was accused of teaching "deist principles" - which posits that God does not interfere directly with the world.

In 1879, on April 26th, the National Park - later renamed the Royal National Park - the 2nd oldest national park in the world, was formally proclaimed in New South Wales, Australia. It was the first park to have the word "national" in its name.

In 1919, on January 6th, President Theodore Roosevelt died. Having gone to bed the previous night after being treated for breathing problems, the ex-President died in his sleep from a clot that had traveled to his lungs. He was 60. After a simple service, Roosevelt was buried on a hillside overlooking Oyster Bay.
